What Are Visible Facial Vessels?

Small blood vessels near the skin’s surface can become more noticeable over time, appearing as fine red lines, broken capillaries, or areas of persistent redness. Sun exposure, aging, genetics, hormonal changes, and certain skin conditions can all contribute to their appearance.

Because visible vessels can vary in size, color, depth, location, and underlying cause, the right treatment is not the same for everyone.

At A-One Laser Clinic, we take a personalized approach. Rather than treating every area of redness with the same settings, we first assess your skin and the vascular concern to determine whether Nordlys™ IPL is an appropriate option for you.

If IPL is not the best match for the concern, we’ll discuss other appropriate options or recommend medical evaluation when needed.

What can IPL vascular treatment help improve?

Selected superficial vascular concerns, including:

Broken capillaries

Fine, thread-like red vessels often visible across the cheeks or around the nose.

Small facial vessels

Isolated or clustered vessels that stand out more in certain lighting.

Redness around the nose

A common spot for visible vascular concerns, often noticeable up close or in photos.

Superficial vascular redness

General blotchy or reddened patches caused by vessels close to the skin's surface.

Selected rosacea-related vessels

Visible vessels tied to a rosacea pattern. See IPL for Rosacea →

Benefits of IPL vascular treatment

Reduces the Appearance of Broken Capillaries, Improves Visible Facial Vessels, Helps Calm Vascular Redness, and Minimal Downtime.

A calmer, more even complexion

Less visible redness where treated vessels used to draw the eye.

Vessel-specific, not blanket treatment

We target the exact vessel bothering you rather than treating your whole face the same way.

Non-invasive, minimal downtime

No needles or incisions — most clients return to normal activities right away.

An honest, vessel-by-vessel evaluation

You'll know whether IPL is genuinely the right tool for your specific vessel before we treat it.

Less reliance on concealer

Many clients need less color-correcting makeup to even out their look day to day.

  • You regularly cover facial redness or visible vessels with makeup.

  • Broken capillaries around your nose or cheeks seem more noticeable.

  • A visible vessel has been there for months or years and hasn't faded.

  • You're unsure whether the redness is broken capillaries, vascular redness, or rosacea.

If this sounds familiar, a consultation can help determine whether IPL vascular treatment is right for your skin.

How Does IPL Treat Visible Blood Vessels?

IPL delivers controlled pulses of light that are absorbed by hemoglobin within superficial blood vessels. The light energy converts to targeted heat, allowing the treated vessel to gradually fade and become less visible over time.

The result is a reduction in the appearance of broken capillaries and vascular redness, creating a clearer, more even-looking complexion.

Why we use Candela Nordlys™ for vascular treatment?

Selective Waveband Technology™

Nordlys uses specialized filtering and pulse control to deliver the wavelengths a specific vascular target actually needs.

Configured by Vessel Type

Candela builds the Nordlys platform with options for smaller superficial vessels as well as a  larger or more resistant vessels.

Selected by your factors

Vessel color, size, depth, location, your skin type, treatment history, and prior response all shape your plan — not a one-size setting.

What to expect the day of IPL Treatment

01 — Consultation & Vascular Assessment

We begin by evaluating your skin, pigmentation, treatment area, skin type, tanning history, and treatment goals.

This allows us to determine whether IPL is appropriate and customize your treatment settings.

03 — IPL Treatment

The Nordlys™ IPL handpiece is applied to the treatment area and delivers controlled pulses of light.

Most clients describe the sensation as a brief snapping or warm feeling with each pulse.

02 — Skin Preparation

Your skin is cleansed and prepared for treatment.

Protective eyewear is provided to protect your eyes from the intense light.

04 —  Immediately After Treatment

The area may look pink, red, warm, or slightly swollen. Some vessels look temporarily darker or more noticeable right after treatment —

That can be a normal part of the response, and we'll tell you what to expect for yours.

What to expect After IPL Treatment

First 24–48 hours

Mild redness, warmth, sensitivity, or swelling. The treated vessel may look temporarily more visible — similar to a mild flush.

Following 1–2 weeks

The area gradually becomes less noticeable. Some vessels darken briefly before fading — don't pick or scratch at it.

Following weeks

Vascular improvement builds gradually; additional sessions may be recommended depending on your response.

Vessels can still develop in the future. IPL can make an existing vessel far less visible, but it can't promise no new one ever forms — sun exposure, genetics, aging, and hormonal changes all play a role going forward, same as they did the first time.

Before IPL Appointment

  • Avoid tanning, tanning beds, sun-exposure or self-tanner before treatment.

  • Arrive without a fresh tan or sunburn

  • Tell us about retinoids, exfoliating products, medications or other active ingredients.

  • Mention any recent facials, peels, IPL or cosmetic treatments

If the treatment area is sunburned, irritated, or not in appropriate condition, your appointment may need to be postponed.

After IPL Appointment

Protect from the Sun

Broad-spectrum sunscreen, and avoid unnecessary sun exposure while your skin recovers.

Keep it gentle

No aggressive exfoliation or irritating skincare right after treatment.

Avoid excess Heat

Follow guidance on saunas, hot tubs, very hot showers, and intense exercise.

Don't Pick or Scratch

If a treated vessel darkens or the surface changes temporarily, let it heal naturally.

Quick Treatment, Minimal Downtime

Minimal Downtime, Easy Recovery

Downtime is typically minimal. You may experience temporary redness, warmth, mild swelling, or darkening of the treated vessels. Most clients can return to their normal activities shortly after treatment.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Every vessel responds differently. Some may show noticeable improvement after one treatment, while others benefit from a series of sessions. Your treatment plan is personalized based on the size, depth, location, and response of the vessels.

Is IPL Right for Everyone?

IPL may not be appropriate for every vascular concern. Treatment may be postponed or an alternative recommended if you have:

  • Recent tanning, sunburn, or irritated skin

  • Certain light-sensitive medications

  • An active skin condition in the treatment area

  • Larger or deeper vessels that may require another approach

  • A spot or vascular concern that should be medically evaluated first

Not every red spot is a vascular concern.

If an area is new, changing, painful, bleeding, or unusual, we recommend medical evaluation before cosmetic treatment.

Why Choose A-One Laser for IPL Vascular Treatment?

We don't treat every red spot the same

Different vessels can look similar but respond very differently to treatment — we evaluate before choosing the technology.

Advanced Nordlys™ technology

A multi-modality platform with options across different vessel types.

Customized treatment

Selected based on your skin and the specific vascular concern, not a generic protocol.

Real expectations

We don't promise every vessel disappears or that new ones can never form — just realistic improvement and the right technology for the job.

What if IPL isn't the Best option?

That's exactly what a personalized consultation is for.

Diffuse redness or flushing?

Our dedicated rosacea approach may be the better fit.

Pigmentation mixed with Redness?

We can build a plan that addresses both concerns appropriately.

Not sure what you're looking at?

You don't need to diagnose your own skin — start with a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
About IPL for Broken Capillaries & Vascular Redness

What vascular concerns can IPL treat?

Selected superficial concerns such as facial redness, small visible vessels, and certain superficial vascular lesions. Suitability depends on the vessel's size, depth, color, and location — not every red mark qualifies.

Can IPL remove broken capillaries?

Yes, it can improve the appearance of selected superficial broken capillaries.

Results vary by vessel, and some respond better to a dedicated vascular laser than to IPL.

Can IPL treat veins around my nose?

Yes. IPL can help reduce the appearance of small, superficial vessels around the nose.

During your consultation, we assess the vessels to determine whether IPL is the most appropriate treatment.

Does vascular IPL hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as brief warmth or a light snapping feeling with each pulse.

Comfort levels can vary depending on the treatment area and individual sensitivity.

Will the Vessels come back?

Treated vessels can fade significantly and may remain less visible over time, but new vessels can develop due to factors such as sun exposure, aging, genetics, and hormonal changes.

Protecting your skin from the sun may help minimize future vascular changes.

Can IPL be used on darker skin tones?

IPL vascular treatment is generally best suited for Fitzpatrick skin types I–III and selected type IV skin, depending on skin tone, treatment area, and vascular concern.

Because higher melanin levels can increase the risk of unwanted pigment changes or burns, a careful skin assessment is essential before treatment.

Can I wear makeup or Exercise After Treatment?

Makeup may be applied once the skin has calmed, based on your individual response.

We recommend temporarily avoiding intense exercise, saunas, hot showers, and excessive heat after treatment.

How many Treatments will I need?

Treatment needs vary depending on the type and number of vessels and how your skin responds.

Some vessels may improve after one session, while others benefit from a series of treatments.
