IPL Photofacial for Sun Damage, Brown Spots & Uneven Skin Tone
Fade Sun Spots and Reveal a More Even-Looking Complexion
Years of sun exposure can gradually leave behind sun spots, age spots, freckles, and uneven pigmentation. IPL photofacial treatment can help reduce the appearance of superficial sun damage and restore a brighter, more even-looking complexion.
At A-One Laser & Aesthetic Clinic in Somerville, MA, we use the Candela Nordlys™ IPL platform to customize treatment according to your skin type, pigmentation, and treatment goals.

Is IPL Right for Your Sun Damage?
This page is for you if you're looking at sun spots, age spots, freckling, or an overall blotchy, uneven tone on your face, chest, neck, or hands — the kind of discoloration that built up gradually from cumulative sun exposure rather than appearing overnight.
-
Brown spots or age spots that have gotten more noticeable over the years
-
Freckling that's denser or darker than you'd like
-
A blotchy, uneven tone across the face, chest, or hands
-
Sun damage you want to address before it gets more pronounced
IPL is particularly useful when pigmentation is superficial and distributed across an area, rather than limited to one isolated spot. During your consultation, we examine your skin and determine whether IPL is the appropriate treatment—or whether another technology may provide a better result.

No cutting, no downtime plan required
IPL is non-invasive and non-ablative. Most clients can return to their normal activities shortly after treatment.
IPL Customized to Your Skin

How Does IPL Treat Sun Damage?
Sun exposure stimulates the skin to produce excess melanin, which can accumulate in localized areas and appear as brown spots, freckles, and uneven pigmentation.
IPL delivers carefully selected wavelengths of light that are absorbed by pigment in the skin. The resulting energy helps target unwanted pigment, allowing the body to gradually clear the treated pigment while the surrounding untreated skin is largely unaffected and reveal a more even-looking complexion.
At A-One Laser & Aesthetic Clinic, we use the Candela Nordlys™ platform with Selective Waveband Technology™, allowing treatment parameters to be customized to the specific skin concern.
The goal isn't simply to use the strongest setting. It's to select the appropriate treatment for your skin.
IPL or PicoWay® for Pigmentation?
Some pigmentation is superficial and widespread, making IPL photofacial treatment an excellent option. Deeper, more stubborn, or melasma-type pigmentation sometimes responds better to PicoWay®, which uses ultra-short pulses suited to more concentrated pigment. If your spots look uneven in depth or don't fit a clean sun-damage pattern, we'll walk you through both options at your consultation rather than defaulting to IPL.
At A-One, we have multiple advanced technologies, so you don't have to decide which treatment you need before your appointment.
We'll evaluate your skin and recommend the technology that best matches your pigmentation and treatment goals.
Not every dark spot is an IPL case.

What to expect the day of IPL Treatment
01 — Personalized Skin Assessment
We begin by evaluating your skin, pigmentation, treatment area, skin type, tanning history, and treatment goals.
This allows us to determine whether IPL is appropriate and customize your treatment settings.
03 — IPL Treatment
The Nordlys™ IPL handpiece is applied to the treatment area and delivers controlled pulses of light.
Most clients describe the sensation as a brief snapping or warm feeling with each pulse.
02 — Prepare & Protect
Your skin is cleansed and prepared for treatment.
Protective eyewear is provided to protect your eyes from the intense light.
04 — Immediately After Treatment
The treated area may feel warm and appear mildly red. Pigmented spots may become temporarily darker after treatment.
These effects are commonly part of the skin's response as the treated pigment begins its clearing process.
What to expect After IPL Treatment
First 24–48 hours
Your skin may feel warm or mildly sensitive, with some temporary redness.
Follow the individualized aftercare instructions provided by your A-One provider.
Following 1–2 weeks
Spots darken further, then flake or fade on their own — Do not pick, scratch, or scrub treated areas.
Allow the skin to naturally shed or clear the treated pigment.

What to expect After IPL Treatment
Before your IPL appointment
-
Avoid tanning, tanning beds, or self-tanner before treatment
-
Arrive without a fresh tan or sunburn
-
Tell us about retinoids, exfoliating products, medications or other active ingredients.
-
Mention any recent facials, peels, or cosmetic treatments
Aftercare
-
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, no exceptions
-
Let darkened spots flake off naturally — don't pick or scrub
-
Keep skincare gentle for the first few days
-
Avoid direct sun and tanning while your skin recovers
Sun protection is especially important after IPL. Continued UV exposure can contribute to new pigmentation and may reduce the longevity of your results.

Frequently Asked Questions
About IPL Sun-Damage/ Brown Spots
Will IPL completely remove my sun spots?
IPL can significantly improve the appearance of many superficial sun spots and areas of sun-related pigmentation, but results vary.
New pigmentation can develop over time because of continued sun exposure, aging, and other factors. Consistent sun protection is an important part of maintaining your results.
Can IPL treat sun damage on my hands and chest?
Yes. IPL can be used to treat selected sun-related pigmentation on areas such as the face, neck, chest, and hands.
Treatment suitability depends on your skin type, the pigmentation present, and the specific treatment area.
Can IPL be used if I have freckles?
IPL can improve the appearance of certain freckles and superficial sun-related pigmentation.
However, freckles and pigmentation can behave differently depending on your skin type and sun exposure history. We'll assess your skin before treatment and determine the safest and most appropriate approach.
How is IPL different from PicoWay® for pigmentation?
IPL uses a broader range of light wavelengths and is particularly useful for treating widespread superficial pigmentation and overall uneven skin tone.
PicoWay® uses extremely short picosecond pulses and may be more appropriate for certain concentrated or stubborn pigment concerns.
The best choice depends on your skin and the type of pigmentation being treated.
Will my brown spots get darker after IPL?
They may. Some treated pigmented spots temporarily become darker after IPL before gradually fading. This can be a normal part of the treatment response.
Your provider will explain what to expect based on your treatment.
What if a dark spot isn't actually sun damage?
Not every dark spot is appropriate for cosmetic IPL treatment.
If a lesion appears unusual, changes in appearance, or requires medical evaluation, we will not simply treat it cosmetically. When appropriate, we'll recommend that it be evaluated by a qualified medical professional.
Is IPL safe for my skin type?
Your safety comes before treatment. IPL can be an excellent treatment for many patients, but treatment parameters need to be carefully selected according to skin type and pigmentation.
During your consultation, we'll assess your skin and determine whether IPL is appropriate—or whether another treatment would be a better choice.
Can IPL treat other skin concerns too?
Yes. Depending on your individual skin, IPL may also help improve the appearance of certain types of facial redness, superficial vessels, freckles, and uneven skin tone.
If you have several concerns, we can discuss whether IPL or another technology at A-One would provide the most comprehensive approach.
Not Sure Whether IPL Is Right for You?
You don't need to diagnose your skin or choose a laser before you contact us.
If you're concerned about sun spots, age spots, freckles, brown pigmentation, uneven skin tone, or other signs of sun damage, our team can evaluate your skin and help determine whether IPL, PicoWay®, another laser treatment, or a different approach is most appropriate.
At A-One Laser & Aesthetic Clinic, our goal is simple: choose the right technology for your skin—not simply the technology we happen to have.
