IPL Photofacial in Somerville, MA

Target Sun Damage, Redness, Pigmentation & Uneven Skin Tone

Untitled design copy.png

If your skin looks sun-damaged, red, blotchy, uneven, or dull, an IPL photofacial may be worth a look. At A-One Laser & Aesthetic Clinic, we use the Candela Nordlys™ platform to selectively target visible pigment and vascular redness — with the goal of skin that looks clearer and more even, not a different face.

  • Candela Nordlys Platform

  • Non-invasive, Non-Ablative

  • Personalized, Not Preset

  • Serving Somerville & Greater Boston Area

IPL Technology

IPL can be used to improve the appearance of:

  • Sun spots & age spots

  • Freckles & pigmentation

  • Facial redness

  • Rosacea- redness

  • Spider veins & facial vessels

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Acne

  • Dull, photodamaged skin

IPL is non-invasive and non-ablative — it works beneath the skin's surface without removing the outer layer of skin the way an ablative resurfacing treatment does. The goal isn't to change who you are. It's skin that looks clearer, more even, and more refreshed.

What is an IPL Photofacial at A-ONE Laser Clinic?

IPL TREATMENT

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike a traditional laser, which generally delivers one specific wavelength, IPL uses a controlled range of wavelengths that can be tuned toward different targets in the skin — melanin in pigmented spots, or hemoglobin in visible blood vessels. When the light is appropriately matched to your skin and concern, that energy heats the target enough for your body to gradually clear or reduce its appearance.

IPL isn't just a generic "photofacial." At A-One, treatment is built around your skin type, your specific concern, the target we're treating, and your skin's current condition — not a preset run on every client who walks in.

Why we use Candela Nordlys™ at A-ONE Laser Clinic

A-One performs IPL treatments on the Candela Nordlys™ platform. Nordlys uses Candela's Selective Waveband Technology™ (SWT) — specialized filtering and pulse technology designed to deliver the wavelengths a treatment target actually needs, rather than a single broad spectrum applied to everything. Candela states this selective approach can require meaningfully less fluence than older broadband IPL systems, which is one reason we chose it.

The technology is only half the equation. How it's configured for your specific skin and concern is what actually determines the result — which is why every visit starts with an assessment, not a fixed setting.

Who is IPL for?

IPL may be appropriate for adults bothered by sun spots, age-related pigmentation, freckles, facial redness, certain visible blood vessels, rosacea-related redness, an uneven complexion, certain acne concerns, or general signs of photodamage. But IPL isn't automatically right for everyone — your skin tone, tanning history, medications, skincare routine, pigmentation type, and medical history all factor in.

Good candidates typically have

  • Sun spots, freckling, or age spot

  • Diffuse facial redness or flushing

  • Small, visible facial vessels

  • A mix of brown and red discoloration

  • Realistic expectations about a series of sessions

May need to Postpone or
use another treatment

  • Recent tanning, significant sun exposure, or sunburn

  • Certain photosensitizing medications

  • Certain active skin conditions

  • Melasma or pigmentation not yet evaluated

  • Deeper skin tones, where melanin can compete with the treatment target and settings need extra care

Your provider reviews your individual situation at consultation. If IPL isn't the right option, we'll say so — and point you toward PicoWay®, Frax®, RF microneedling, a chemical peel, or medical evaluation, depending on what your skin actually needs.

What happens during your IPL visit at A-ONE Laser Clinic

1. Skin Consultation

We discuss your primary concern, skin history, past treatments, sun exposure, medications, and goals — then decide whether IPL is the right call. We may take photos so progress can be tracked over time.

2. Skin Preparation

Your skin is cleansed and prepped, and you'll wear protective eyewear for the session.

3. IPL treatment

The Nordlys handpiece is applied to the area. You'll feel a series of quick pulses — most people describe it as brief heat or a snapping sensation, similar to a rubber band.

Cooling & Post-Treatment Care

Your skin may look pink or feel warm. Pigmented spots can look temporarily darker before fading; vascular areas may look temporarily more visible before improving. We'll walk you through exactly what to expect for your treatment.

What to Expect After IPL Treatment

First 24–48 hours

Skin may feel warm or mildly sensitive. Follow your personalized aftercare instructions.

Following days

Pigmented spots may darken and gradually fade. Redness may decrease. Some treated vessels become less visible.

Following weeks

Skin gradually looks more even and clearer. Results build progressively — not all at once.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IPL SKIN Rejuvenation question answered,
Before you Book at A-One Laser Clinic

Is IPL a Laser?

No. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses a broad range of light wavelengths rather than the single-wavelength light used by most lasers.

That difference gives IPL its versatility for treating multiple superficial concerns, including pigmentation, redness, and uneven skin tone.

What can IPL improve?

IPL can help improve several common skin concerns, including sun damage, brown spots, freckles, uneven skin tone, redness, visible superficial vessels, and overall dullness.

It can also give the skin a brighter, more even-looking appearance.

Can IPL remove Sun spots?

Yes, IPL can significantly improve the appearance of many superficial sun spots, age spots, freckles, and other unwanted pigmentation.

Your provider will examine the area first to determine whether IPL is appropriate or whether another technology, such as PicoWay®, may provide a better approach.

Can IPL treat Redness / Rosacea?

Yes. IPL can help reduce the appearance of facial redness and selected superficial blood vessels associated with conditions such as rosacea.

Because every case is different, we customize the treatment to your skin and may recommend IPL alone or as part of a broader skin-treatment plan.

Can IPL treat Spider Veins?

Yes, IPL can improve the appearance of certain small, superficial facial vessels. The best technology depends on the size, depth, and location of the vessel.

At A-One, we have multiple laser and light-based technologies, allowing us to select the approach that best fits your specific concern.

Can IPL treat Acne?

Yes, IPL may be helpful for certain types of acne and post-acne redness or discoloration. Your treatment plan depends on the type of acne and what you are trying to improve.

During your consultation, we'll determine whether IPL or another treatment would be more appropriate for your skin.

How many IPL Treatments
will I need?

Many clients benefit from a series of treatments, but there is no one-size-fits-all number.

The number of sessions depends on your pigmentation, redness, skin type, treatment area, and goals. We'll evaluate your skin and create a personalized treatment plan during your consultation.

Does IPL hurt?

Most clients describe IPL as a quick snapping or warm sensation with each pulse.

Treatment is generally well tolerated, and comfort can be adjusted based on your skin and treatment area.

Is there Downtime after IPL?

IPL is non-invasive and non-ablative, so downtime is typically no to minimal. You may experience temporary warmth or redness, and treated pigmentation may temporarily appear darker before gradually fading.

We'll explain exactly what to expect before your treatment and how to care for your skin afterward.

Can IPL be used on Darker Skin ?

IPL can be appropriate for some skin tones, but treatment must be carefully customized because the skin's natural melanin can interact with the light.

This is one reason professional skin assessment and proper device selection matter. If IPL isn't the best option for your skin, our team can discuss other technologies that may be more appropriate.

IPL can substantially improve existing pigmentation, but it cannot prevent new pigmentation from developing in the future.

Sun exposure, hormones, aging, and other factors can contribute to new pigmentation. We can also recommend a long-term skin maintenance and sun-protection plan to help preserve your results.

Why choose A-One for IPL Treatment?

At A-One Laser & Aesthetic Clinic, we don't believe in a one-treatment-fits-all approach.

Our clinic offers multiple advanced technologies, including Nordlys™ IPL, PicoWay® picosecond laser, and Candela GentleMax Pro®, allowing us to evaluate your skin and determine which technology—or combination of treatments—best matches your goals.

Our focus is not simply on performing a treatment. It's on understanding your skin, choosing the right technology, and creating a treatment plan designed around you.

Not Sure Which Treatment Is Right for You?

You don't have to know whether IPL, PicoWay® laser, or another skin treatment is right for you before you book.

At A-One Laser & Aesthetic Clinic, we evaluate your skin, pigmentation, redness, skin type, and treatment goals to determine which technology and treatment approach is most appropriate for you. Our advanced treatment options allow us to create a personalized skin rejuvenation plan rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Whether you're looking to improve sun spots, pigmentation, redness, uneven skin tone, freckles, or overall skin appearance, we're here to help you understand your options.
