Laser Hair Removal in Somerville: What to Expect Before, During and After Treatment

Laser hair removal can simplify a routine built around frequent shaving, waxing or managing ingrown hairs. But if you have never had treatment before, it is normal to wonder what actually happens at the appointment—and whether the treatment is appropriate for your skin and hair.

At A-One Laser & Aesthetic Clinic in Somerville, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro, a dual-wavelength system that allows treatment to be customized for different skin types. Here is what to expect from consultation through aftercare.

First, does laser hair removal work for everyone?

Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment in the hair follicle. It generally responds best when the hair contains enough pigment for the laser to target. Blonde, white and gray hairs often respond poorly because they contain little or no pigment.

For light-colored hairs that laser cannot effectively target, electrolysis may be a more appropriate option. A consultation helps determine which method—or combination of methods—fits your hair and goals.

Laser hair removal is better described as long-term hair reduction rather than a guarantee that every hair will be permanently eliminated. Hormones, medications, age and the treatment area can influence regrowth and maintenance needs.

Why hair grows in cycles?

Hair follicles do not all grow at the same time. Laser is most effective when hair is in an active growth stage, but only a portion of the follicles in an area are in that stage during any one appointment.

That is why laser hair removal requires a series of treatments. Each appointment targets another group of actively growing hairs. Over time, many clients notice that hair grows back more slowly, more sparsely and finer, although results vary.

Before your first appointment; Schedule a consultation

At A-One Laser Clinic, We assess your skin type, hair color and thickness, treatment area, medical history, medications, recent sun exposure and goals. This information helps determine candidacy and select an appropriate treatment approach.

At A-One Laser, the GentleMax Pro combines two wavelengths:

  • 755 nm Alexandrite, commonly selected for lighter skin types when appropriate

  • 1064 nm Nd, commonly selected for darker skin types when appropriate

Having two wavelengths does not replace professional assessment. Settings still need to be chosen carefully for the individual.

Avoid waxing, tweezing and threading.

These methods remove the hair from the follicle—the target needed for laser treatment. Follow the clinic’s instructions about how long to avoid them before your appointment. Shaving is generally preferred because it leaves the follicle in place.

Limit tanning and Sun Exposure.

A tan changes the amount of pigment in the skin and may affect treatment safety. Tell your provider about natural tanning, tanning beds and self-tanning products. Do not hide recent sun exposure to avoid rescheduling; accurate information helps protect your skin.

Review medications and skin products.

Some medications and topical products can increase skin sensitivity. Provide an accurate medication and skincare list, and follow the specific instructions given for your treatment area. Do not stop a prescribed medication unless the prescribing clinician tells you to do so.

Shave as instructed.

You will usually be asked to shave the area before treatment, but timing instructions can vary. Avoid applying heavy lotion, deodorant, oil or fragrance to the area on treatment day unless your provider says otherwise.

What happens during Laser Hair Removal?

The treatment area is reviewed and prepared, and protective eyewear is used. The provider selects settings based on your skin, hair and previous response, then delivers controlled laser pulses across the treatment area.

Many clients describe the sensation as brief warmth or a quick snap. The GentleMax Pro uses a cooling feature designed to improve comfort and protect the skin surface. Sensation varies depending on the area, hair density and individual sensitivity.

Appointment length depends on the treatment area. A small facial area can be relatively quick, while legs, back or multiple areas take longer.

What should you expect after Laser Hair Removal at A-One Laser Clinic?

Temporary redness, warmth or small bumps around the follicles can occur after treatment. Your provider will explain what is normal for your skin and when to contact the clinic.

Aftercare may include:

  • Keeping the area cool and treating it gently

  • Avoiding rubbing, scratching and harsh exfoliation

  • Limiting heat, strenuous exercise or hot environments for the period advised

  • Protecting exposed skin from the sun

  • Following instructions about deodorant, makeup and active skincare products

The treated hairs do not always disappear immediately. Some may appear to grow before shedding over the following days or weeks. Avoid plucking them; allow the shedding process to occur naturally.

Contact your provider if you experience an unexpected or worsening skin reaction. Individual aftercare should take priority over generic online advice.

How many sessions will you need?

There is no universal number. Your treatment plan can depend on:

  • Body area

  • Hair color, thickness and density

  • Skin type

  • Hormonal influences, including PCOS-related growth

  • Medications and health history

  • Previous hair-removal methods

  • Consistency with recommended appointment timing

Some areas respond faster than others, and maintenance sessions may be helpful for certain clients. Your progress should be reviewed throughout the series so the plan can be adjusted appropriately.

Laser hair removal versus IPL

Laser and IPL are not the same technology. A true laser uses a specific wavelength, while IPL uses a broad spectrum of light. At A-One Laser, we use GentleMax Pro laser technology for hair removal and reserve our IPL system for appropriate skin concerns.

The name of a machine alone is not enough to determine whether treatment is right for you. The provider’s assessment, wavelength selection, settings, technique and follow-up are all important parts of a responsible treatment plan.
